The Belgian shipping and cleantech group, CMB.TECH and Swiss marine power company WinGD have come together to develop ammonia-fueled two-stroke engines. The objective is to install the ammonia dual-fuel X72DF engine on ten 210000 dwt Newcastle max bulk carriers that will be produced at Qingdao Beihai shipbuilding by 2025 and 2026. These carriers will be the first of their kind based on WinGD’s today X92B engine.
CMB.TECH has a substantial understanding of alternative fuels and operates its own large machine and industrial applications that are built and designed by them. These large marine applications run on hydrogen and ammonia. Alexander Saverys, the CEO of CMB Tech says that he believes that ammonia is the best zero-carbon fuel for deep sea carriers and would like to use it for dry bulk vessels, chemical tankers, and container vessels. He further stated that the partnership with WinGD for the development of the first ammonia-fueled two-stroke engines for their groundbreaking partnership paved the way for zero-emission in shipping.
