South Africa has taken a major step in energy diversification with the establishment of its first LNG import terminal at Richards Bay. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has signed a 25-year agreement with Zululand Energy Terminals to develop the terminal, aligning with the government’s plan to introduce 6,000 MW of gas-to-power projects.

Phase one of the project will have a 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity, with potential expansion to 5 MTPA. Additionally, FFS Tank Terminals will operate a liquid bulk terminal to meet the rising demand for bunker fuels. Transnet has hailed these developments as a game changer for the region, promising economic growth and a more sustainable energy future for South Africa.
