India’s Best Performing Port has proactively addressed concerns related to the Empty Containers Yard by implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline operations. The directive mandates that shipping lines collect and remit payments to empty container yards to minimize wait times for transporters. The Standard Operating Procedures include the following measures:

All Depot Operating Members will accept online payments for handling charges.

To alleviate issues for transporters and facilitate trade while avoiding payment complications, shipping lines will handle all payments to empty container yard operators, ensuring a fully paid delivery order is prepared before the transporter arrives at the yard.

The depot will assess and offload empty containers by the shipping lines’ SOP and guidelines.

Transporters presenting an expired Empty Acceptance letter will not be permitted entry until they obtain valid documentation from the shipping line, as per the shipping line’s SOP.

Dr. Surendra Kumar Ahirwar, IRTS, Joint Secretary of Logistics and Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, GoI, visited JNPA to discuss these issues with stakeholders alongside Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, and Chairman of JNPA. To further alleviate concerns regarding the Empty Container Yard, JNPA has designated approximately 3.51 hectares for the storage of empty containers. Additionally, a site measuring 26.20 hectares has been identified for developing another Empty Container Yard, with a tender for operator selection to be issued shortly. This will provide a total of around 30 hectares of land for the storage and stacking of empty containers at JNPA, significantly saving time and costs for trade.

These initiatives will greatly enhance the capacity of the Empty Containers Yard, optimizing container operations and improving overall efficiency at the port.
