Four major Japanese maritime companies have unveiled a design for a methanol-powered Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) featuring rotor sails. Idemitsu Tanker, Iino Kaiun Kaisha, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard have revealed details of the 339.5-meter-long, 309,400 dwt vessel, which will also include a shaft generator.
The proponents of this new design claim it can reduce CO2 emissions by over 40% compared to the reference line under the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulation. The companies announced their intention to pursue strategically phased shipbuilding orders in partnership with Japanese refineries for this next-generation, eco-friendly VLCC.
