Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal held a bilateral meeting with Greek Minister Christos Stylianides on Monday to discuss the implementation of the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The meeting took place during the Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue, organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
Sonowal extended an invitation to Greek shipping companies to play a pivotal role in India’s shipbuilding industry, highlighting Greece’s leadership in global shipping. He said that in the shipping sector, Greece has a leadership role and we require Greek companies to operate in India and significantly contribute to our shipbuilding industry.
The discussion centered on the IMEC, a major trade route project connecting India, the Middle East, and Europe via a network of railways and sea routes. Announced during the G20 Summit last year, the corridor aims to enhance trade efficiency, strengthen economic ties, and reduce reliance on longer routes.
The collaboration underscores India and Greece’s commitment to fostering strong economic and maritime partnerships amid evolving global dynamics. (ORF)
