Cosco Shipping has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two partners to enhance cooperation in green shipping energy. The agreement focuses on utilizing biomass resources from Southeast Asia and leveraging advanced technologies to establish a green methanol production facility that meets European Union standards. This move aligns with Cosco Shipping Group’s commitment to renewable energy adoption.
The company hailed the MoU as a significant milestone, marking a new chapter in the production and application of green shipping fuels. In August, Cosco Shipping Lines, the container shipping arm of the group, ordered 12 methanol dual-fuel container ships, underscoring its commitment to transitioning its fleet toward alternative fuels and renewable energy. Methanol has become the centerpiece of Cosco’s decarbonization strategy for its container fleet.
Industry analyst Alphaliner noted in its weekly report that China’s well-organized state planning and efficient coordination could give the country a strong commercial advantage in securing future access to methanol as a sustainable fuel.
This agreement is a step forward in advancing green shipping solutions and aligns with the global push for more sustainable maritime operations.
