Chinese intra-Asia carrier Zhonggu Logistics and Vietnam Maritime Corp (VIMC) have introduced a container shipping service linking China’s Beibu Gulf with Vietnam and India. The joint service will operate every three weeks, with feeder vessels departing from Qinzhou port and making stops at Hai Phong and Kolkata.
Linerlytica analyst Tan Hua Joo noted that while India and Vietnam are among the fastest-growing container trade markets, the new service remains small-scale, using 500 TEU vessels.
Beibu Gulf, also called the Gulf of Tonkin Economic Belt, plays a key role in China’s “Go West” strategy, which aims to boost economic growth in its southwestern coastal regions. The service is expected to transport Chinese exports, including glass, paper, and electronics, while importing wood chips, starch, spices, and food products from Vietnam and India.
VIMC’s deputy general director, Le Quang Trung, stated that the service would enhance trade among the three nations. Beibu Gulf Port Group’s GM Liu Shengyou added that it would integrate China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Vietnam’s Two Corridors, One Belt project, strengthening regional trade connectivity.
Qinzhou and Fangchenggang ports in Beibu Gulf are projected to handle over 10 million TEU in 2025, up from 9 million TEU in 2024. Vietnam remains China’s largest trade partner, with bilateral trade surpassing $200 billion last year, while Guangxi has maintained strong trade ties with Vietnam for over 26 years.
Amid increasing Sino-US trade tensions, Vietnam’s container exports have surged as companies relocate production to avoid US tariffs. India’s container market is also expanding rapidly, driven by rising trade and initiatives like Sagarmala, which reduces logistics costs through port-led development.
VIMC plans to further strengthen its trade links with India by launching container services to Chennai and Kattupalli ports later this year.
