Brazil and Norway have formalized a groundbreaking agreement to create a green shipping corridor between the two nations. Signed by Brazilian Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho and Norway’s Ambassador to Brazil, Odd Magne Ruud, the initiative will promote vessels powered by low- or zero-carbon fuels, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport.
Minister Costa Filho hailed the agreement as a milestone in global logistics, emphasizing its long-term environmental and economic impact. This project benefits not only Brazil and Norway but the entire world. Together, we are committed to making maritime transport more sustainable while fostering economic growth. Brazil aims to be a leader in environmentally responsible shipping, he stated.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines several key initiatives, including:
- Developing and operationalizing the green shipping corridor
- Strengthening business cooperation on sustainable maritime transport
- Building low- and zero-carbon supply chains
- Supporting the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement
A pilot project will engage industry leaders and research institutions from both nations to map strategic routes, identify suitable ports, and scale up zero-emission fuel solutions. Brazil and Norway plan to present their transatlantic green corridor proposals at the 2025 UN Climate Summit (COP30) in Belém, scheduled for November 10–21.
