In a significant boost to trade and logistics, Pakistan has inaugurated a multimodal trade route connecting China to the UAE through the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system. The system is a global customs transit framework designed to streamline cross-border trade by reducing customs-related delays.

NLC trucks transported electronic equipment from Kashgar, China, to Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, reducing the transit time to just 10 days compared to the 30-day sea route. This marks a milestone in the operationalization of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and underscores the potential of the Khunjerab Pass as a critical year-round trade gateway.

The Khunjerab Pass, located over 4,600 meters above sea level, has traditionally facilitated bilateral trade. It now serves as a vital link connecting South Asia with Europe. The first shipment began at Sost Dry Port in Gilgit-Baltistan, before moving to Karachi for the sea leg to the UAE.

Imran Ali, former president of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chamber of Commerce, praised the development of Pakistan’s economy, emphasizing its potential to boost regional trade and benefit local communities. Muhammad Iqbal, president of the Gilgit-Baltistan Importers and Exporters Association, noted that the project could significantly improve economic conditions and revenue generation.

Experts believe the initiative positions Pakistan as a major regional trade hub, enhancing economic activities in key regions like Gilgit-Baltistan and Gwadar. This development is expected to transform trade dynamics across the region while fostering economic growth and connectivity.
